Goals for the Depressed

My Goals for the day:

Take a shower

Blow dry hair

Get dressed into clothes that are not PJs

Talk to someone other than boyfriend

Step outside and breathe fresh air

Do a sit up, not just getting up from a laying down position, an actual crunch. Do another one if that didn’t kill you

Don’t eat out of boredom

Use your phone for calling or texting only, no game playing

No napping, you are not actually in need of more sleep

I’ve been in a complete funk the last few days so I made myself this list. One of the things I’ve learned about myself when I’m in a really bad place mentally is that I have to keep things very basic. Even the smallest task takes effort because when there is zero motivation everything feels overwhelming. I actually did most of my list and added finding a new project.

For me, working creatively with my hands is very therapeutic. So off we went to the craft store to find a new project I could work on. As I mentioned in my post Dreaming of Mad Skills I wanted to learn how to crochet because I loved the idea of making usable items I could give away as gifts. Now I’m not one for formal training or classes. I also don’t have a lot of money to throw away on a project I may only be excited about for a few weeks and then be done. The best and cheapest way to learn a new skill is to visit the kids aisles. I love their all in one craft projects. They are easy to follow and they give you everything you need to succeed at a much lower cost than the projects for adults. Today I found this:photo 1 (1)

I’ve never learned to crochet or knit, in fact I don’t really know the difference (I hope that didn’t offend anyone). So here is my new creative therapeutic project. Hopefully, this will be the reset my depressed brain needs to get out of the negative thoughts and back to functioning like a normal person, back to writing and my blogging 101 course (yep that’s still happening, I think I’m at a D- now).

Technically it is knitting, just loom knitting. They make huge complex knitting looms that do patterns.
You can do tubes or flat items with the one you have.

I will just be thrilled if I can make even one of the things pictured on the box 🙂

Just make sure you keep going in the same direction. It’s fairly simple.

Thanks for the tip! If I actually do make something I will post a pic. If it’s an epic fail…well we will just pretend this post never happened hehehe.

I like your list and I hope that knitting goes well! You’ll have to share a picture when you complete it!

You are not alone in that D- ! I too have needed to take time off for “the mental flu” as we call it in my house. I like your suggestion to do kids crafts. I also think it’s sometimes therapeutic to nurture the inner child when depression tries to take hold of me and doing a kids craft is a wonderful suggestion. I like how you kept your goals down to earth and practical too. Did you enjoy the knitting loom?

Thank you! I have the box sitting here and have yet to open it. Tonight will probably be just reading over the instructions and getting to know the materials. I was so happy I actually did stuff today I thought I should catch up on my blog stuff before the motivation fizzled away.

Wow…that list is pretty much everything that I need to do as well. Keep us updated on your knitting. My mum keeps offering to teach me to crochet but I dont have the patience to sit for that long x

Such a good idea, I got a knitting book for christmas but it seems so complicated. Will check the kids craft section at my supermarket next time i go, im useless at complicated things.

I highly recommend checking out the kids craft stuff. It really does give you the most basic concepts and usually they ensure faster completed projects so you don’t get discouraged.

Oh how much I could relate to this… lately I just want to crawl into bed and sleep until the world ends.

I’m sorry you can relate to that feeling. It’s not easy but it does pass…eventually.
